Born in Poland in 1950, Hendryk Szydlowski studied at Krakow Academy of Fine Art for 11 years and gained his masters degree. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1978, and whilst there, lectured at Whitecliffe Art School and exhibited, both in New Zealand and Australia. He developed a new printing technique during this period, naming it "Polprint" in honour of his Polish heritage. In 1985 he moved to Australia and lectured at the Claremont School of Fine Arts in Perth. In 1994 Henryk Szydlowski became a full time artist. Since 1976 Szydlowski has exhibited in over 88 solo exhibitions and many group exhibitions. He describes himself as a 'Credo Artist', a painter who delivers decorativeness in form and colour, expressed in conjunction with elementary symbolism in drawing.
