Born in Wellington, N.S.W in 1940, Max Cullen studied at the National Art School in 1956 and the Julian Ashton School in Sydney in 1959-60, He worked as an illustrator for magazines, and from 1957 exhibited in competitive and commercial exhibitions. He is a painter, sculptor and actor becoming known through his acting with the Ensemble Theatre Company in Sydney.
We have records of art auction sales by Max Cullen from 1979 and in total 26 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 22 (85%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $2,160 for Study with Stamps sold by Lawson~Menzies (now trading as Menzies) in May 2006. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2021. Works by Max Cullen are held by the Art Gallery of NSW and National Gallery of Australia.
