Bornin 1803 in Witney, Oxfordshire, Daniel Long was a pharmacist and artist who arrived in Port Phillip, Australia in 1840. He is reported to have "painted hundreds of scenes in oils” of Victoria and surrounding colonies. In the Victorian Exhibition of Fine Arts, 1860, Long exhibited a View on the Yarra near the Lunatic Asylum (no. 4). He is recorded as living at Dandenong Road, Prahran and listed in the the Melbourne Directories between 1862-1886. Long was the third mayor of Prahran between 1859-1860.
We have records of art auction sales by Daniel Long from 1980 and in total 14 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 7 (50%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $8,580 for Dight's Mill on the Yarra Near Melbourne sold by Sotheby's in November 1987. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2019.
