Born in Melbourne in 1876, She studied at the National Gallery School in Melbourne in the 1890s and had a studio with her sister Dora in Collins Street in the early 1900s. Elsie Barlow married the police magistrate in Castlemaine in 1901 and moved to that town, Exhibitions of her paintings in Castlemaine inspired the formation of the Castlemaine Art Gallery. The family moved back to Melbourne in 1916 and her husband died the following year. She set up a sudio in central Melbourne and held an exhibition of 76 paintings in 1919. She was a member of the Victorian Artist's Society and exhibtied with them from 1902 to 1921. She was also a member of the Twenty Melbourne Painters Group. She died in 1948. The Catlemaine Art Gallery held a restrospective of her work in 1977.
We have records of art auction sales by Elsie Barlow from 1978 and in total 53 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 43 (81%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $2,500 for My New Doll sold by Leonard Joel in July 1987. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023.
