Born in Glossop, Derbyshire, England 1933, Tony Stones arrived in New Zealand in 1955. A portrait and figurative painter and a sculptor, he undertook commissions to represent many public figures including New Zealand prime minister Peter Fraser in Wellington and Jean Batten at Auckland Airport in the 1980s. He exhibited with the Auckland Society of Arts. He returned to live and work in West Oxfordshire, in 1983. From the early 2000s he spent much of his time travelling his home and Beijing, where he completed a series of sculptures lining the route to the Bird's Nest Stadium, built for the Olympic games in 2008.
The total number of works by Tony Stones offered for sale by auction since 1989 is 39, of which 26 (67%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,823 for Road Bowling sold by International Art Centre in March 2004. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2020. Works by Tony Stones are held by the Auckland Art Gallery and Christchurch Art Gallery.
