Born in Malvern, Victoria in 1894, Frankie Derham studied sculpture at Swinburne Technical College from 1911 to 1913 and at the George Bell School in the 1930s. She lectured in art at tertiary level, she is known for her interest in art education for pre and primary school children. She published a book on art training for young children in 1961 and the Australian Pre-School Association administers a scholarship for research into chilren's art. She was been active in the Victorian Arts and Crafts Society from the early 1920s, and was a Founding Member of the Contemporary Art Society. She was awarded an MBE for her service to this field.
