Born in Brisbane in 1934, Elisabeth Cummings studied at the East Sydney Technical College and in Europe. She won the New South Wales Travelling Scholarship in 1958 and lived in Florence for a decade, where she conducted a private art school with her husband, James Barker. On her return to Australia, along with a group of like-minded artists she established an artist's community in Wedderburn, Victoria. In 2017 the third retrospective of her "sumptuous paintings of studio interiors and her evocations of the landscape" toured the S. H. Ervin Gallery in Sydney, and three regional New South Wales galleries.

The total number of works by Elisabeth Cummings offered for sale by auction since 1977 is 190, of which 156 (82%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $43,200 for Inside the Yellow Room sold by Shapiro Auctioneers in November 2016. This year 8 works have been offered for sale. Works by Elisabeth Cummings are held by the Art Gallery of NSW, Art Gallery of South Australia and a further two major public national galleries (see list below).
