Born in Sydney in 1865, Alice Norton received her artistic training at the Sydney Art School (1891-1896) under Julian R. Ashton and Alfred J. Daplyn. In 1893, ‘The Painting Club’was established in Sydney. It was the first Australian art society exclusively for women artists and meetings and exhibitions were held at Alice E. Norton’s family home. In 1898 five of her works were selected for the Exhibition of Australian Art at the Grafton Gallery in London. She was known as a watercolourist, painting mainly landscapes. Her works are represented in the Art Gallery of New South Wales. She was a member of the Royal Art Society and a foundation member of the Society of Artists and Society of Women Painters, and a member of the Society of Arts & Crafts of N.S.W. In Adelaide, she exhibited at the Royal South Australian Society of Arts and in Perth, exhibited at the West Australian Society of Arts. In New Zealand, she exhibited at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts.
