Born in Wellington, New Zealand in 1930, John Drawbridge studied in London and Paris before returning to Wellington in 1963 and establishing a studio at Island Bay. He was a teacher at Wellington Polytechnic School of Design from 1964 to 1986. Working in oil and watercolour, he was also a printmaker and stained glass artist. He created a number of murals in public buildings in Wellington, and also in New Zealand House in London. He was awarded the order Member of the British Empire (MBE) in 1978.

John Drawbridge is one of the most prolific of the artists listed in our database, with the number of works offered for sale by auction since 1989 of 447, of which 368 (82%) were sold.
