Joseph Johnson was born in Adelaide in 1848 and he was educated at Geelong in Victoria and returned to Adelaide in 1868. A painter, cartoonist, illustrator, journalist and politician he worked as a literary critic from 1875 to 1880 after which he became proprietor and editor of Adelaide Punch to which he contributed comic black and white sketches. His painting Euchre in the Bush c1970s was purchased by the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery in 1980 and included in the Australian Regional Galleries' official bicentennial exhibition, The Face of Australia in 1988. His work was included in the Melbourne International Exhibition 1880-81. In 1884 he entered the South Australian Parliament and became Minister for Education in 1887-89. Joseph Johnson died in Adelaide in 1904.

Since 1970 we have recorded only one work being sold at auction by this artist, which was in 2013.
