Born in Gunning, NSW on 20 July 1890, Gallop was apprenticed to a signwriter and display artist. He studied at Sydney Art School under Julian Ashton and later became a leading member of the Australian Painters' and Etchers' Society. He was also an art teacher at the East Sydney Technical College. His landscapes were painted in oil and watercolour and he established a reputation as a teacher in the techniques of watercolour painting. He exhibited at the Royal Art Society of New South Wales in Lavender Bay where his portrait can be viewed.
