George Frederick Folingsby was born in Ireland in 1828. Aged 18 he migrated to Canada, lived and studied in New York, and spent two years at the Royal Academy in London. He then worked for six years at the Munich Academy under Karl von Piloty. He came to Melbourne in 1879, making his living as as portrait painter, and with his reputation firmly established in Europe,was appointed director of the Melbourne National Gallery and master of its school two years later. He had a large influence on Australian art in his position as the second master of the National Gallery after Von Guerard.
