Born in Wellington, New Zealand in 1865, Maud Burge (nee Williams) the granddaughter of the artist William Beetham, studied under James Nairn and later in France under Fred Mayer, an English watercolourist. She married George Burge in about 1911, and they travelled and painted. She travelled through Europe as a friend and companion of Frances Hodgkins. In 1937 they returned to New Zealand where they settled. Maud Burge exhibited oils and watercolours at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts from 1899.

Maude Burge is one of the most prolific of the artists listed in our database, with the number of works offered for sale by auction since 1988 of 414, of which 323 (78%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $11,832 for Beach Scene Southern France sold by International Art Centre in March 1988. This year one work has been offered for sale.
