Charles Edward Hern was born in England in 1848. He moved to Australia in 1873 and lived in Sydney where he was an active member of the New South Wales Academy of Arts from 1873-1880 and one of the first members of the Art Society of NSW from 1880 to 1883. He painted scenes of Sydney Harbour, the Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury River regions. Chromolithographs were made from his original paintings, and Six Views of the Hawkesbury River and Six Views of the Blue Mountains, the latter published by John Sands in the early 1880s. His work was represented at the International Exhibition in Melbourne in 1880. He returned to England in 1883 and lived in Hyde Park, London and exhibiting in the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, Dowdeswell Galleries, Fine Art Society, The Dudley and New Dudley Galleries and at the Royal Academy. He was given a great honour when he was commissioned to teach watercolour painting to the Daughters of the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII), HRH Princess Maud and Princess Victoria.
