Born in England in 1757, William Bradley was First-Lieutenant and Draughtsman on 'Sirius' with the First Fleet. He painted the first views of Botany Bay and Port Jackson. He returned to England in 1792 and continued his career in the British Navy. However he was convicted of fraud in and although pardonned in 1814 was exiled from Britain, posssibly to France. He received a free pardon in 1822.
