James Anderson was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1813 and arrived in Victoria in 1852. He was on the committee that organised the 1853 Victorian Fine Arts Exhibition and contributed three works. A portrait painter he worked in Melbourne and country Victoria and in Sydney. Four of his portraits of the Gilbert Family are held at the NSW State Library.
