As well as being an artist, Isaac Whitehead was Melbourne's premier frame maker in the mid to late nineteenth century with premises in Collins Street, and his business was patronised by the leading artists of the period. As an artist, Whitehead's landscapes were executed in oil with the subject matter indicating a visti to New Zealand in the late 1870s. He exhibited with the Victorian Academy of Arts in Melbourne in 1870 to 1878 and 1881 - 82.

We have records of art auction sales by Isaac Whitehead from 1973 and in total 62 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 37 (60%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $63,440 for Near Lilydale 1872 sold by Mossgreen Auctions in February 2016. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by Isaac Whitehead are held by the National Gallery of Victoria and National Gallery of Australia.
