Born in New South Wales in 1954, Rex Dupain studied painting in the 1970s at the National Art School, where he later taught painting and drawing. He completed a Master of Fine Arts (Painting) at The University of New South Wales in 1992, and pursued a successful career as a painter of lyrical and figurative landscapes until the 1990s, when he discovered a love of photography, following in the footsteps of his father, the legendary modernist Australian photographer Rex Dupain.
