Born in New Zealand in 1869, Hodgkins studied under W.M. Hodgkins and G.P. Nerli. She exhibited in New Zealand from 1890 until 1901 when she travelled to England and Europe. She visited Australia and New Zealand several timesand exhibited in Melbourne 1912 and Sydney 1913. The exhibitions were received by critics as brilliant and daring examples in the style of the French impressionistic art. However she spent most of her life in Europe. She was a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy and the Paris Salon.
Frances Hodgkins is one of the most prolific of the artists listed in our database, with the number of works offered for sale by auction since 1967 of 526, of which 332 (63%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $407,884 for Still Life with Landscape sold by Webb's in April 2003. This year 16 works have been offered for sale.
