Born in 1838, Henry Rawson arrived in Auckland in 1856 and settled in New Plymouth. From 1870 he was living in Wellington and had operating a dental practice. He was a landscape painter and engraver and painted scenes in Taranaki, the Whanganui River, Nelson and the lower South Island. He exhibited at the Otago Art Societry in 1878.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,828 for Two Maori Figures Before Mt Egmont sold by Dunbar Sloane in May 2002.
