Born in Victoria in 1938, Max Hurley is a painter and costume and set designer. He lived and exhibited in Melbourne in the 1970s, Sydney and the early 1980s, then apparently moved to Brisbane, where he designed for many companies including the Queensland Light Opera Company, Queensland Opera, Queensland Ballet, Australian Youth Ballet, and Ballet Theatre of Queensland. The Max Hurley Collection of Costume Designs is displayed on the Mezzanine floor at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre.

We have records of art auction sales by Max Hurley from 1978 and in total 35 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 25 (71%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,500 for Thatching the Love Nest sold by Spink Auctions in April 1981. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2016.
