Caroline Gotch (nee Yates) was born in Liverpool England in 1854. She studied at the Heatherley School of Fine Art in 1878 and then at the Slade School of Art in London before enrolling at the Academie Julian in Paris during 1880. She married artist Thomas Cooper Gotch (1854-1931) in 1881. She visited Australia in 1884 and exhibited in Melbourne. She assisted in the formation of the Anglo-Australian Society of Artists.
