Born in Germany in 1874, Adolph Plate was a seaman and watercolourist. He left Germany in 1889 to train as a midshipman. After spending some years in Asia and the Pacific he settled in Perth, WA, where he wrote and illustrated articles on his experiences. Plate exhibited in Perth at the Western Australian Society of Arts and Crafts from 1908 until 1913 when he left the city to become a farmer. His son, Carl Olaf Plate (1909 - 1977) was also a prominent Australian modernist painter and collage artist.
