Born in Victoria in 1911, James Cant studied at the East Sydney Technical College and the Julian Ashton School before going to England in 1932. He returned to Australia in 1939. After service with the AIF during World War II, and a short period in London, he settled in Adelaide where he painted and taught art. He exhibited in several countries.
We have records of art auction sales by James Cant from 1971 and in total 324 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 200 (62%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $24,000 for Abstract with Aboriginal Motif 1947 sold by Sotheby's in April 2010. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by James Cant are held by the Art Gallery of South Australia, National Gallery of Australia and a further five major public national galleries (see list below).
