About Alfred Hornbrook
Major Alfred Hornbrook arrived in Wellington in 1840 after serving in the British Legion in Spain. In 1850 he established the Mitre Inn in Lyttleton and later bought land in Canterbury. Hornbrook represented Port Victoria (Lyttleton) on the Canterbury Provincial Council from 1862 to 1871. As a gentleman artist, he painted landscapes in watercolour and ink.
