Born in New South Wales in 1901, Hanke studied at the J.S. Watkins School in Sydney. He is best known for his oil paintings, both portrait and landscape. He won numerous awards, including the 1939 Archibald Prize and the 1936 Sydney Prize, and was a fellow of the Royal Art Society of New South Wales.
