Born in Switzerland in 1898, Herman arrived in Australia in 1937 after studying at the Zurich Technical School and the George Bell School in Melbourne. In Europe he worked as an art dealer, travelling through Europe, the Americas and Africa. He moved to Sydney in 1938 and was appointed as an official war artist in 1945/46. A major retrospective of his work curated by the Art Gallery of New South Wales toured state galleries in 1981. Herman is known as a painter of still lifes, portraits and cityscapes. He has won the Wynne Prize on three occasions and the Sulman prize twice.
