Born in England in 1794, surveyor and artist Robert Hoddle arrived in Australia in 1823 after several years in the Cape Colony. He worked as a surveyor for the British Government with John Oxley for ten years, and as the first Surveyor General of Victoria was responsible for the planning of sections of Melbourne, Williamstown and Geelong. As an accomplished artist he depicted scenes of the Port Phillip region, New South Wales and what is now Canberra.
