Peter Lik was born in Melbourne to Czech parents who had immigrated to Australia after World War II. When Lik was eight years old, his parents gifted him a Kodak Brownie box camera for his birthday, which sparked his interest in photography. Lik is a self-taught photographer and has not had any formal education in photography. In 1984, Lik made his first visit to the United States and travelled around the country for a year in an old van. During his stay in Alaska, he became familiar with panoramic cameras and learned about large format photography. In 1989, Lik returned to the United States and undertook a project to photograph landscapes in all 50 states. Lik is well-known for his panoramic photos, and his prints are highly acclaimed for their large size and overall quality. During the early 1990s, Lik worked for the tourism department of Queensland, Australia. Later, in 1994, he relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada, and established Lik USA, a company that offers photo printing and framing services. In the mid-1990s, Lik started his own publishing company, Lik Publishing, which produced coffee table books, postcards, and calendars. One of Lik's most noteworthy achievements was in December 2010 when he sold a photograph for US$1 million to an anonymous collector, which became his highest-priced sale at the time. Lik opened his first gallery in Cairns, Australia, in 1997, followed by galleries in Lahaina, Hawaii, in 2003, Las Vegas in 2005, and Manhattan in 2008. Presently, Lik has a total of 12 galleries across the United States.
