Born in England in 1820, John Noone arrived in Melbourne in 1856 and established a photographic studio in Collins Street, later claiming to have the oldest established photographic studio in Melbourne. In the early 1860s he was employed in the Victorian Crown Lands Office as a photographer. His work was exhibited at the Melbourne Public Library Exhibition of 1869, London International Exhibition of 1873 and the Sydney Intercolonial Exhibition of 1870 where he exhibited examples of photolithography invented in Melbourne 1859 by John Walter Osborne. He is also known for his photographs of early Melbourne including a series of views of the city and its major buildings taken in December 1869. He was commissioned by the government to prepare albums for visiting dignitaries and recipients included Queen Victoria, Prince Alfred (during his visit to Melbourne in 1868), the Princess of Wales, the Princess of Russia, the Royal Academy of Arts and the emperor of Austria, among other notable recipients.
