MaryLivingston was born in Edinburg, Scotland in 1843 and migrated to Australia at some time prior to 1874, when her work Checkmate was awarded First Prize at Metropolitan Intercolonial Exhibition, Sydney - Figure Subjects. She was a member of the Victorian Academy of Art (VAA) from 1875, and studied at the National Gallery School of Victoria from 1870 to 1878, exhibiting alongside her teachers Eugene von Guerard and Louis Buvelot. She was the inaugural teacher of art at Presbyterian Ladies College..She died in Melbourne in 1880, aged 37. Typically, the artist signed using her initials e.g., M H Livingston or, on her prints, MHL. Margaret Horne Livingston has been incorrectly known as Mary H Livingston and is sometimes confused with Tasmanian artist Mary E Livingston, who studied at the National Gallery School, in 1879.

Since 1970 we have recorded only one work being sold at auction by this artist, which was in 1984.

Margaret Horne (Mary) Livingston is not listed in any of the standard biographical references listed on our references page.
