Born in Latvia in 1908, Meilerts studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Riga, and studied and worked extensively in France, Greece, Sweden and Germany. She held her first solo show in Germany, before coming to Australia in the late 1940s. She held eleven solo shows in Australia. A painter in the style of the French impressionists, she won the Dunlop Prize in 1950. She was a member of the Melbourne Society of Women Painters, and the Victorian Artist's Society where she regularly exhibited.
