Martin Thompson born in Wellington in 1956 was a self-taught artist whose grid-like drawings gained international recognition among aficionados of 'outsider' art. His drawings were meticulously constructed, usually on A4 or A3 sheets of 1mm spaced graph paper, with repeated patterns devised from formulas he calculated for each piece. His work become internationally renowned after its inclusion in the American Folk Art Museum's Obsessive Drawings exhibition in 2005. He moved to Dunedin in 2007 where he died on September 4, 2021 aged 65.
