Professional photographer Charles Bayliss was born in Suffolk, England in 1850. He arrived in Melbourne in 1854 and in the 1870s worked as a photographer's assistant. In the 1880s he moved to Sydney, the location of the subjects of most of his photographs recorded in the Australian Art Sales Digest. He exhibited his work at the 1883-84 Calcutta International Exhibition and the 1886 Colonial and Indian Exhibition in London. Copies of his Album of Photographs of the Sydney Exhibition Building and Other Sydney Buildings (1879) are in various public collections, including the National Library of Australia.

The earliest auction listing we have for Charles Bayliss is in 2004 and in total 12 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 10 (83%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $3,120 for Panorama of Sydney, North Shore c. 1880 sold by Deutscher~Menzies in December 2004.
