Born in Newbury, England in 1880, Bernice Edwell arrived in Sydney in her youth. She studied at the Royal Art Society School, Sydney from 1899 to 1900 and in Paris at Academie Colarossi. A landscape painter working in oils and a miniaturist, she was a Founder Member of the Society of Women Painters in Sydney, and elected to the first Council. She exhibited at the Royal Art Society, Sydney, the Society of artists and the Society of Women Painters, and in London at the Royal Academy in 1921 and 1923. Her work was included in Art Nouveau in Australia, a 1980 Australian Gallery Directors Council touring exhibition.
We have records of art auction sales by Bernice Edwell from 1977 and in total 28 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 18 (64%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,265 for Portrait of a Child (Grandchild of Isabel Ross-Soden) c. 1915 sold by Leski Auctions Pty. Ltd in March 2005. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2008. Works by Bernice Edwell are held by the Art Gallery of NSW, National Gallery of Victoria and National Gallery of Australia.
