David Shennan was born in Scotland in 1965. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1974 and studied at the Elam School of Fine Arts University of Auckland 1989 - 1990 gaining a Master of Fine Arts, (First Class Honours) and won the Fowlds Memorial Prize in Fine Arts, Most Distinguished on Faculty at Masters Level. In 1989 by public vore he had won the Wilkins and Davies New Zealand Young Artist of the Year. Major influences in these early works can be likened to works by his artist-friends, Tony Fomison and Philip Clairmont. His first solo exhibition was in 1991 and he has participated throughout New Zealand since then, as well showing regularly in group shows.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $3,945 for Four Signatures c. 11th Charter sold by Webb's in April 2005. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2022.
