Born in Motueka, New Zealand in 1931, Jeanne MacAskill studied at Victoria College at the University of Wellington, the teachers colleges in Wellington and Dunedin in New Zealand and at Chelsea Art School in London for 5 years and lived in France and the UK for 18 years. Best known as a realist landscape painter, her later works show a Maori cultural interest, while other works show an abstract influence. She exhibited with the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts from 1974. In 2004 she was made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to the arts and community and in 2009 she received The Governor Generals award for services to the New Zealand Acedemy of Fine Arts.
