George Roberts was born in Tunbridge Wells, England c1800. A watercolourist and theatre scene-painter, he migrated to Sydney in about 1840 with his family, and worked there as a theatrical scene-painter, artist and carpenter. His watercolours, dating from the 1840s to the 1860s include views of the Sydney Botanical Gardens, Mrs Macquarie's Chair and the Military Barracks, Wynyard, Oxford Street, leading up to Victoria Barracks, Glenmore Road, and Rushcutter's Bay. He died in Sydney in 1865 while watching a theatre performance.
Since 1970 we have recorded only one work being sold at auction by this artist, which was in 1988.
