Born in Scotland in 1855, John Campbell emigrated to Australia, living in New South Wales, and Queensland before moving to Perth where he died in 1924. He was known for his naive style of painting and his depiction of detailed architectural features of local buildings. His work was included in the exhibition The Colonial Eye at the Art Gallery of Western Australia in 1979.
