Robert Hague, a New Zealand-born Australian artist, was born in 1967 in Rotorua. In 1985, he migrated to Australia, where he became best known for his metal and marble sculptures and his lithographic print works. Hague initially exhibited as a painter in New Zealand and Australia before concentrating on sculpture. Hague's first sculpture exhibition, "Why Not?," was held at Tap Gallery in Sydney and included other artists such as James Powditch and Mark Booth. He also exhibited at the Sculpture by the Sea in 1998, where he was awarded the inaugural Sculpture by the Sea Director's Prize in 1999. Hague continued to exhibit at various galleries, including Defiance Gallery and King St Gallery, before joining Stella Downer Fine Art at the newly opened Danks Street Gallery Complex in 2001. From 1999 to 2003, Hague worked as a workshop assistant to senior sculptor Ron Robertson-Swann OAM before holding his first solo exhibitions at Lister Calder Gallery, Stella Downer Fine Art, and the Mosman Art Gallery in 2003. Since then, he has exhibited in more than 120 group and solo shows and is represented in both public and corporate collections in Australia and overseas. In 2013, Deakin University Gallery in Melbourne held a ten-year retrospective of Hague's work, including the publication 'Deca' with essays by Ashley Crawford and Ken Scarlett. In 2014, a biographical film called Uncertain Ciphers was produced by Peter Lamont, featuring interviews with art critics Andrew Frost, Ken Scarlett, and art dealer Lisa Fehily. Hague's significant commissions include the 65-tonne concrete sculpture Stride Orbis (2013) for Form700 head offices in Melbourne and Sol, Repose, One Mile, and Skel (2010) for the Polo Club Hotel in Tianjin, China. Hague has also received numerous awards for his work, including the Established Artist Residency at the 2016 Blake Prize and the Lorne Sculpture 2011 small sculpture Award. Hague's work is featured in several collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria, the National Library of Australia, the Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery, and the Art Gallery of NSW Members. In 2012, Hague began working on a series of lithographic prints with master printmaker Peter Lancaster at his Melbourne print studios, Lancaster Press, which were later acquired by the National Gallery of Australia.
