Born in Amsterdam in 1834, Jacques Carabain studied at the Amsterdam Academy and travelled extensively, settling in Brussels from 1880. In 1885 he travelled to Australia and painted several views of cities in Australia and New Zealand and exhibited at the Victorian Academy of Arts. After living in Melbourne for a time, he returned to Belgium in 1889 and held his final exhibition in 1907.
