Born in Chile in 1946, Juan Davila studied law and art in Chile before arriving in Australia in 1974. A painter, editor and art writer, much of his art is an expression of social comment; some of his more controversial paintings have depicted exaggerated sexuality. He has written numerous articles for art journals and edited an art and criticism monograph series. Davila has exhibited in most Australian capitals.
