Born in North Queensland in 1943, William Yang studied architecture at University of Queensland. He commenced photographing in the 1970s, often in black and white. He is also a film maker, performance artist. He has exhibited since 1977 in Sydney, Melbourne Ballarat, Brisbane and Grafton, and overseas in China in 1991 and Japan in 1993. A retrospective of his work was held at the State Library of New South Wales in 1993, and in 2003 another retrospective was held at the Wollongong City Gallery.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,964 for Michael & Ken sold by Lawsons in May 2022. This year one work has been offered for sale.
