Born in Sydney in 1940, Robyn Kahukiwa trained as a commercial artist. She moved to New Zealand in 1959 and worked as a teacher. Here she met young Maoris and began to learn more about her own Maori heritage. Her series of paintings entitled "Wahine Toa", established her reputation as an artist.
