Peter Hammon Lindsay, landscape painter, cartoonist and commercial artist, was born in Hawthorn, Victoria in 1908, the only child of artist Percy Lindsay and his wife Jessie. He is the nephew of fellow Lindsay family artists: Norman Lindsay, Daryl Lindsay and Lionel Lindsay. In 1918 they moved to Roseville Sydney and when his mother died in 1924, he lived with his father from whom he received artistic training. He later attended the J.S. Watkins Art School, in Pitt Street, Sydney, and then worked as Art Director for a Sydney printing company where he stayed for 38 years. In his own time, he contributed cartoons and drawings to magazines including the Bulletin and Australian Women's Weekly. He enlisted in the army during World War II, and although not an accredited war artist continued to pursue his craft over this period. His father died in 1952 and he was instrumental in arranging a retrospective of his father's work at the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery in 1975.
