Born in London in 1744, studied with artists William Shipley and Richard Wilson. In 1772 William Hodges was appointed topographical artist on the 'HMS Resolution' on James Cook's second expedition and travelled widely in the Pacific. He published illustrated books of his travels and engravings, although he did not visit Australia.

The total number of works by William Hodges offered for sale by auction since 1975 is 26, of which 19 (73%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $512,080 for A Maori Before a Waterfall in Dusky Bay sold by International Art Centre in July 2023. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by William Hodges are held by the Auckland Art Gallery, National Gallery of Australia and a further three major public national galleries (see list below).
