Dorothy Baker was born 1914 at Mudoona (north west of Shepparton) Victoria. She was the daughter of Albert and Mary Maskell (nee Linehan), and educated at St Bernard School in Shepparton. She moved to South Yarra in Melbourne where she met and married John Baker in 1936 and had two sons. Adrian (1937) and John (1941).

We have records of art auction sales by Dorothy Baker from 1977 and in total 36 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 21 (58%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $3,000 for Woman Brushing Hair sold by Lawson~Menzies (now trading as Menzies) in December 2007. This year one work has been offered for sale. Works by Dorothy Baker are held by the Ian Potter Museum of Art.
