One of the most important early frontier photographers in Queensland, Alphonse Chargois was born in England. After migrating to Australia, he set up a studio in Townsville in 1879 and then from 1889 based himself in the small town of Normanton on the Gulf of Carpentaria. He later moved to Croydon in Western Queensland travelling and photographing the Gulf and Cape York region. He settled in Cairns after 1900.
