Born in England in 1771, Eyre studied for a short time in Coventry before being transported to Australia in 1801 for seven years on a charge of housebreaking. He was granted a conditional pardon in 1804 and started painting soon after. Principally a topographical illustrator, he drew a chart for Captain William Bligh in 1807 and, during the same period, had several engravings published. Eyre left Australia in 1813 and no record of his activities is available from that time.
