Charles Lloyd Jones Australia, 1878-1958

Charles Lloyd Jones was born in Burwood, New South Wales, in 1878. After schooling he was apprenticed to artist D. H. Souter and later studied at Julian Ashton's Art School in Sydney. He first exhibited with the Society of Artists (SOA) 1897 and then in 1898, 1899, 1900 and also at the Commonwealth Art Exhibition in early 1901. He spent two years in London studying art at the Slade School in London in the late 1890s. On returning to Australia, as a third generation member of the Sydney based David Jones retailing family he joined the family business, becoming a director and in 1920, chairman. He retained his interest in art, and in 1907 became a foundation member of the Society of Artists and exhibited at their first Sydney exhibition. He was a financial backer of Art in Australia magazine when it was established in 1916. In 1934 Charles Lloyd Jones was appointed to the board of trustees of the National Art Gallery of NSW (later the Art Gallery of New South Wales) by the NSW State Government. As chairman of David Jones Ltd, he promoted the establishment of the David Jones' Art Gallery at the Market Street department store. The gallery became one of the leading commercial galleries in Sydney and held a diverse range of regular exhibitions. He was knighted in 1951.
